The Art of Selecting Job References: Why Variety Matters

If a reference list is required when submitting a job application, prepare to include a diverse pool of both coworkers and a supervisor or two. Providing different options of individuals who can speak about you and your work helps a potential employer capture a full, unique snapshot of who you are as an employee and potential coworker. Former supervisors are typically references that employers have the most interest in exploring. If you choose not to include a supervisor, this may generate some suspicion from an employer. Employers are not always willing to sacrifice this request, so if you choose not to include a supervisor on your reference list, be prepared to explain why not and then answer lots of questions afterward.
