Associate Head of School

The associate head of school will oversee broad segments of the academic program during this exciting time in Westmark’s history. About the Role

Drew seeks an experienced leader as its chief finance and operations officer (CFOO), who will report directly to the head of school. The CFOO works closely with the head of school and the board of trustees to develop and execute the school’s long-term financial strategy, planning, and analysis. The CFOO will work collaboratively with other members of the school’s strategic leadership team, and oversee the business office, facilities, operations, technology, and HR. The school is about to embark on a new strategic planning exercise and would like to grow its endowment to support enhancements to the program and increases to faculty compensation. A talented and engaged CFOO partner will be essential for these and many other school-wide initiatives. Drew would like to onboard its next CFOO this spring, but no later than July 1, 2023.

Francis Parker School is a dynamic and innovative educational institution with an abundance of ambition, energy, and vision. Each day, over 1,300 students from JK through grade 12, along with hundreds of faculty and staff, step onto two large campuses at one of the leading independent schools in San Diego. Over the last two decades, the school has undertaken a nearly $100M capital campaign to transform the Linda Vista Campus, which houses the middle and upper school divisions. Soon, a similar campaign will begin for the historic Mission Hills Campus.

As new buildings come online, and systems and processes become more complex, the need for operational leadership at the highest administrative level has never been more salient. Thus, Parker recently created a new position, head of operations (HOO), to report to the head of school. Serving as the school’s de facto chief operations officer, the HOO will oversee several critical, school-wide, functional areas, each of which is led by a departmental director or manager. In addition, the HOO will collaborate extensively with the Parker Leadership Team, the Board, and other stakeholders on planning and executing the aforementioned Mission Hills Campus transformation, which is likely to occur in many phases over the span of a decade.

In the southwest section of Portland sits a premier independent school with both an outstanding reputation and an exciting future. Catlin Gabel has been educating preschool through grade 12 students since 1957, and the two schools that merged to form Catlin Gabel have nearly 100 years of history before that. This progressive institution that runs on an old family farm is a true diverse and inclusive community, with more than 50% students of color. The main campus comprises approximately 70 acres, and the school recently purchased an eight-acre campus just three blocks away that housed a former art college. With this acquisition comes an exciting array of possibilities for Catlin Gabel to expand its program, services, and facilities. On that note, the school has just begun a $30M campaign that will yield a thriving community center for athletics and wellness and add funds to the endowment. In the future, the school will likely undertake additional campaigns to support facility renovations as well as new construction.

Catlin Gabel saught a chief finance and operations officer (CFOO), reporting to the head of school, to play a critical role for all these major undertakings. On a day-to-day basis, the CFOO oversees three critical finance and operations units--the Finance Department, the Facilities Department, and the Technology Department--each of which has an experienced leader at the helm. Between all that, the CFOO works collaboratively with other leadership team members, including two assistant heads of school, and helps to ensure continued operational improvement across this complex campus. The CFOO also works closely with the head and the board on financial strategy, planning, and analysis.
